GRG Position on Scientific Topics

The Glyphosate Renewal Group (GRG) has submitted a 180,000-page dossier to the European Food Safety Authority for consideration by the Rapporteur Member State (RMS) Assessment Group on Glyphosate (AGG), consisting of France, Hungary, The Netherlands, and Sweden, seeking renewal of the active substance glyphosate.

The RMS has evaluated this dossier and released a consultation version of their assessment (the draft Renewal Assessment Report: dRAR).

As part of the GRG’s transparency commitment, we provide brief summaries of different elements of the dRAR, including indications of how the GRG is intending to respond to the topics raised by the RMS, where appropriate.

During the public consultation in the period of September – November 2021 Member States, registrants and the general public have commented on the dRAR for glyphosate. An additional information request was received from EFSA on 14th March, 2022 in accordance with Article 13 (3) of Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) No 844/2012. The GRG is providing updated summary documents in the area of toxicology, ecotoxicology, environmental fate and residues, containing information pertinent to the risk assessment and building upon the transparency documents previously uploaded here.

A summary document on key areas of the toxicology risk assessment

The GRG has prepared an updated summary document detailing key areas of the toxicology risk assessment that relates specifically to EFSA’s additional information request from 14th March 2022.

A summary document on key areas of the e-fate risk assessment

The GRG has prepared an updated summary document detailing key areas of the e-fate risk assessment that relates specifically to EFSA’s additional information request from 14th March 2022.

A summary document on key areas of the residues risk assessment

The GRG has prepared an updated summary document detailing key areas of the residues risk assessment, that relates specifically to EFSA’s additional information request from 14th March 2022.

A summary document on key areas of the Ecotoxicological risk assessment

The GRG has prepared an updated summary document detailing key areas of the Ecotoxicological risk assessment, that relates specifically to EFSA’s additional information request from 14th March, 2022.

GRG Industry Symposium: 6th International Congress of Toxicology 2022

On 19 September, in the framework of the 16th International Congress of Toxicology 2022 (ICTXVI) in Maastricht, The Netherlands, the Glyphosate Renewal Group organised an industry symposium: Glyphosate Neurotoxicology Evaluation: Systematic Reviews of Epidemiology and Animal Studies for Risk Assessment.

GRG Position on Grass Residue Decline Data for Chronic Wild Mammal Risk Assessment

In the 2021 dRAR for glyphosate, the RMS requested that the grass residue decline data, used to refine the level of residues anticipated on dietary items for the chronic wild mammal risk assessment, may need to be re-assessed using current kinetics analysis approaches. The GRG performed a kinetics re-analysis of the data from 22 sets of grass residue trials on which the mean DT50 value of 2.8 days is based as presented in the EFSA (2015) conclusion on glyphosate.

Residues of glyphosate in food and dietary exposure

There is considerable information originating from both the scientific literature and media about the detection of glyphosate in the foods we eat, and consequently, in urine. Unfortunately, these reports often come with little context on how the data is obtained or what the reported values mean in terms of safety.

GRG Industry Symposium: EUROTOX 2021 online conference

On 27 September, in the frame of the EUROTOX 2021 online conference, the Glyphosate Renewal Group has organised an industry symposium. During the symposium, experts discussed the Assessment Group on Glyphosate’s recently released draft Renewal Assessment Report (dRAR) endpoints and proposed classification for glyphosate in Europe.

Effects on Non-Target Species

The GRG has prepared a position document detailing key areas of the Ecotoxicological risk assessment, that relate to the ‘Effects on Non-Target Species’ sections of the dRAR.

Draft RAR concludes that glyphosate has no endocrine disrupting properties

The RMS have re-evaluated glyphosate for its potential to be an endocrine disruptor concluding glyphosate is not an endocrine disruptor through the estrogenic, androgenic, thyroid, and steroidogenic pathways.

Glyphosate Monitoring Data

Over the past 30 years glyphosate has become the most important herbicide in global agriculture. For farmers, glyphosate herbicides provide simple, flexible and cost-effective weed control.
